Happy Birthday USA, Happy Birthday Keeley

In Culture of Corruption, International politics, Iraq War, US Politics on July 5, 2006 at 3:23 pm

I’ve been missing in action for a few days, but I just had to get on here and make a post for July 4th and the holdiay that comes right after that, Keeley’s birthday (july 5th).  I heard that when he was younger, he thought the fireworks were in honor of him.

Anyway, since I don’t have time to make several posts, I decided to make a list of ten things (and articles relating to them) that we should be reflecting on 230 years after the birth of this country. In other words – yesterday everyone celebrated this country, today let’s take a look at some of the things that are (still) wrong with it.

In no particular order (and by no means, not all inclusive):

10 Things I Hate About You (America)

1) Oil company “rights” coming before the environment.

2) Voting rights still being in danger

3) The fight over immigration (and Bush changing his mind)

4) Corporations running things (and trying to brand EVERYTHING)

5) Challenges to public access television, freedom of the internet, and other forms of free speech (aka turning free speech to FEE speech)

6) Modern slavery

7) Spying and more spying

8) The ongoing war in Iraq and abuse by American soldiers

9) Corruption

10) Actions taken by the U.S. in the ongoing Israel vs. Palestine conflict

Like I said before, this list isn’t all inclusive.  There are plenty of other things going on in the U.S. that deserve attention too.  These are just ten things that have caught my attention in the news recently and tie in with things that I feel are generally wrong with this country.  There are plenty of things I love about America too, but that’s for a different post.
